How usable is your website? Before beginning to think about optimising your site and driving more traffic towards it it is critical to ensure your site is usable.Where do I start? There are many useful articles on the internet about design, navigation, and content formatting (see Resources section for a few selected links), and there are innumerable theories and strategies for doing this. The prime directives and principles for building and maintaining a usable site are , however, more or less universal, eg:
Shouldn't my website already be consistent, relevant and easy to use?One or more of these principles are surprisingly enough often neglected when commissioning a site design and preparing content, but they are critical to having a site people will want to stay on once they have actually been drawn in to your site - the philosophy of "Build it and they will come" (see link on our Resources page) is a fallacy - the web is simplay another advertising medium and there is no reason to believe that by simply having a website you will instantly be inundated with users or orders. The Internet is effectively the biggest marketplace in the world and if your site is difficult to get around, confusing, hard to find, or irrelevant once you have found it, there are innumerable others targetting the same niche and ready to fill the gap. |
